  • Dr. Zhang graduated Summa Cum Laude from UCLA with a degree in Biology. He then attended the Medical College of Wisconsin, where he served as president of the Asian Pacific American Medical Student Association (APAMSA) and graduated with Research Distinction. He pursued his psychiatry residency at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago, a highly regarded program that offered specialized training in psychodynamic psychotherapy through the renowned Chicago Psychoanalytic Institute—a rare opportunity among psychiatric residencies. Additionally, he served as the inpatient chief at Rush.

After completing his residency, Dr. Zhang began his career at the Edward Hines, Jr. Veterans Affairs (VA) Hospital in Illinois, where he also served as an Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at Loyola University Medical Center (LUMC), teaching psychiatry residents. He later transferred to the Greater Los Angeles VA to be closer to his family, where he also teaches UCLA psychiatry residents. Dr. Zhang considers it an honor to have cared for thousands of U.S. veterans, addressing not only their mental health but also their overall well-being.

A licensed physician since 2013, Dr. Zhang has dedicated his career to understanding the complex interplay of anxiety, depression, and sleep disorders. Seeking the flexibility to provide truly personalized care, he established his own practice, where he works with each patient one-on-one to develop individualized treatment plans.

  • Born to scientific researchers and physicians, Dr. Howie Zhang spent his early years in China, Sweden, and Canada before moving to California at age twelve. His global upbringing fostered a deep sense of open-mindedness and adaptability, allowing him to remain calm in new situations and environments.

Dr. Zhang lives in a suburb of Los Angeles with his wife and four young children.

Originally from Honolulu, Hawaii, his wife is a pediatrician and sleep physician at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles (CHLA) as well as an Assistant Professor of Clinical Pediatrics at the Keck School of Medicine of University of Southern California (USC). They met in medical school and have been married since 2013.

He enjoys spending time with his family and actively participates in school and community events.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Yes, I am a medical doctor specializing in mental health, also known as a psychiatrist.

  • A psychiatrist is a medical doctor who has completed medical school and received specialized training in psychiatry and mental health. I can prescribe medications and recommend various treatments tailored to mental health conditions.

A psychologist, on the other hand, specializes in treating mental health disorders through talk therapy. They typically hold an advanced degree, but generally do not prescribe medication.

    • Bipolar Disorder

    • Schizophrenia

    • Substance Use Disorders & Addiction

My primary areas of interest are anxiety, depression, and sleep disorders—issues that often overlap and impact every aspect of life, from work and academic performance to relationships and overall well-being.

  • I take an individualized, holistic approach to treatment, working closely with each patient to determine the best course of action based on their unique needs. My treatment options include:

    • Psychodynamic Psychotherapy

    • Medication Management – including assessment of effectiveness and side effects

    • Nutritional and Lifestyle Modifications

  • Absolutely. If you have questions about my approach or practice, you can schedule a 15-minute preliminary call for $95. Please note that this call does not establish a doctor-patient relationship but is meant to provide general guidance.

If you choose to move forward with an initial appointment, the $95 fee will be credited toward your first visit.

  • Great! To begin, schedule a 55-minute initial appointment for $795. Before your appointment, you will complete a comprehensive, holistic intake questionnaire, which takes about 30 minutes to complete. Please have any prior medical or mental health records available.

During our initial consultation, I will start with the most important question:
“What can I do for you?”

We will discuss your concerns, treatment goals, and what success looks like for you. This is an opportunity to explore what’s important to you, your personal history, and any recent stressors affecting your well-being. Together, we will develop a holistic treatment plan tailored to your values and needs.

Follow-up appointments will be 20 minutes ($345) or 40 minutes ($545), with frequency determined by your individual situation.

  • Achieving a clear mind and a fulfilling life is priceless.

I believe that meaningful change—both in mindset and in life—is possible. I have helped thousands of patients achieve it, and I am confident I can help you too.

For the first 3–6 months of treatment, the expected investment is:

    • $2,500 – $5,000 (without psychotherapy)

    • $4,500 – $13,000 (with weekly or biweekly psychotherapy)

  • No, I do not accept insurance. However, I can provide a superbill that you may submit for out-of-network reimbursement. I currently do not see Medicare beneficiaries.

Insurance often encourages shorter appointment durations, whereas my practice allows the flexibility for extended visits to ensure comprehensive care.

Moreover, insurance imposes strict documentation requirements, meaning patient charts are often reviewed by multiple staff members—many of whom have never practiced medicine—to determine medical appropriateness. This is why insurance-based providers frequently spend much of the appointment typing on their computers. I do not tailor my practice or documentation to meet insurance guidelines; my priority is your well-being.

As an independent practitioner, I have the freedom to apply my expertise, clinical experience, and diverse skill set to best serve your needs. Additionally, as a solo practitioner, your care remains completely confidential.

  • I primarily offer telehealth appointments via video or phone. In-person appointments may be available on a case-by-case basis.

Kind Words

Psychiatrist providing telehealth services in California.
  • “dr. zhang helped me out a lot when i was struggling. he has a very calm and gentle demeanor; very peaceful and patient vibes. i never felt rushed. i could tell he listens because he'd confirm if he understood me correctly and makes an effort to get what i'm saying. he also explained my condition thoroughly and answered a lot of the questions i had-- and i had a lot of specific questions, lol. and he never got impatient with me for asking them. he also calmed me down and reassured me when i was distressed and crying about my diagnosis (mental health can be pretty difficult). he also warned me about side effects and long term concerns about medications i would be taking so that i could feel prepared going into my treatment plan. medication management can be pretty intimidating since it's trial and error, with unexpected side effects and things to consider as everyone reacts to medications differently. dr. zhang was realistic with me about what to expect, what to consider when taking medications, and was reassuring about the process. would recommend!”

  • “I am very thankful for Dr zhang who helped my daughter during hard times. He is very patient and spends time listening. He is knowledgeable and experienced. The care he gave my daughter was very helpful. My daughter is now happier, studying for her career."

  • "I was ridden with worry about my high-pressure career. Dr. Zhang's steady hand pulled me from the fog and gave me my life back. Now living every day is a gift."
